Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia has inaugurated its first Internet Governance Forum (SIGF) in Mogadishu, celebrating a milestone in the nation’s efforts to harness digital technology for development and democratic reform.

The two-day forum, launched Thursday by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, brings together stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities of managing Somalia’s growing digital landscape.

The conference has drawn participation from government agencies, universities, private sector leaders, and civil society organizations. Discussions will focus on regulating social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, which dominate Somali online spaces, and addressing the risks of misinformation and cybercrime.

Organizers seek to identify actionable strategies to leverage the internet for inclusion and progress while mitigating potential harms.

Internet connectivity has surged across Somalia in recent years, presenting both opportunities and challenges. While digital tools have revolutionized communication and commerce, the lack of robust regulations has raised concerns about privacy, online safety, data protection and the unchecked spread of harmful content.

Experts at the forum will explore global best practices in internet governance while tailoring solutions to Somalia’s unique context, which includes promoting collaboration among key stakeholders to ensure the internet is used as a tool for empowerment rather than division.

The forum outcomes are expected to guide policy decisions and strengthen Somalia’s role as a regional leader in digital transformation.
