Somali electoral commission elects new leadership ahead of key reforms

    Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission elected Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan as its chairman and Sadik Abshir Garad as deputy chairman during a committee vote in Mogadishu on Monday. 

    Hassan secured 17 out of 18 votes, while Garad received the same tally for the deputy role, according to an announcement from the commission.
     

    In his inaugural address, Chairman Hassan pledged to oversee the country’s transition to a one-person, one-vote electoral system by 2026, following the conclusion of key political agreements. 

    The commission faces significant challenges, as opposition politicians and the administrations of Jubbaland and Puntland have largely boycotted the electoral laws approved by Somalia’s Parliament.

    The commission is responsible for managing elections across all levels of government, aiming to replace Somalia’s clan-based system with a universal voting model.
