Somali Deputy PM praises Turkey-brokered deal with Ethiopia as diplomatic breakthrough

Friday December 13, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama commended the Turkish-brokered agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia on Friday as a new step toward renewing diplomatic ties and promoting regional development.

In an interview with Somali National Television, Jama highlighted the agreement as a resolution to disputes that have strained relations over the past two years, asserting that it sets the stage for peaceful coexistence and regional development.

"The agreement ensures Somalia and Ethiopia will cooperate on a mutually acceptable basis in line with international law," Jama said. "Somalia is committed to living in peace with its neighbours and advancing development in the region and beyond."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who mediated the talks, announced the deal late Wednesday, expressing confidence that it would foster regional stability and shared prosperity. "The agreement reflects mutual respect and cooperation, laying a foundation for lasting peace," Erdogan stated.

The deal comes after heightened tensions stemming from Ethiopia's 2024 memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Somaliland, which proposed leasing coastal land for a naval base to recognize Somaliland's independence. Somalia strongly opposed the move, calling it a violation of its sovereignty.

Jama credited the successful negotiations to the Somali government's leadership and public opposition to Ethiopia's actions. He also thanked Turkey for its instrumental role in bringing both parties to the table.
