Kenyan delegation arrives in Kismayo to mediate federal and Jubbaland state leaders

Tuesday November 5, 2024

Kismayo (HOL) — A Kenyan government delegation arrived in Kismayo on Monday to mediate ongoing political tensions between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Jubbaland state leader Ahmed Madobe concerning the upcoming election process.

The delegation includes senior politicians such as former Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Secretary General Mahbub Moalim, former IGAD Special Envoy for Somalia Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey, and Wajir County Senator Abdirahman Ali Hassan Olow.

The Presidential Palace of Jubbaland confirmed that Ahmed Madobe met with the Kenyan mediators and noted that President Mohamud had requested their assistance to resolve the political dispute.

The political dispute between Mohamud and Madobe began when Madobe walked out of the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu, insisting that Puntland and SSC Khatumo should be included amid Puntland’s ongoing boycott of the NCC meetings due to its own disputes with the federal government.

Recently, federal ministers from Jubbaland resigned over the political dispute, followed by a call from the Jubbaland leader for federal lawmakers representing Jubbaland to attend a consultation meeting in Kismayo.
