Third Somali Minister resigns, citing federal government interference in regional state affairs

Wednesday November 6, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Deputy Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Sadam Mohamud Abdi, resigned on Tuesday night, becoming the third minister to step down in the last few days.

The departing minister, who is also a federal parliament member representing Puntland, joins two previous federal ministers, Abdirashid Jire Qalinle and Ahmed Isman Ibrahim Daqare from Jubbaland, in resigning over an escalating political dispute between the federal government and the leaders of Jubbaland and Puntland.

He stated that his decision was prompted by what he perceived as the politicization of development projects for Puntland and alleged federal government maneuvers to instigate conflict in Jubbaland areas.

Two days later, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed Ahmed Nor Sheikh Mohamed Loxox as the new state minister for Planning and Abdirashid Mohamed Du’ale as the Deputy Minister of Education, filling the vacant positions.

The political rift between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe began when Madobe walked out of the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu, demanding inclusion of Puntland and SSC Khatumo, as Puntland continued its boycott of NCC meetings due to disputes with the federal government.
