Mogadishu (HOL) — Himilo Qaran political party, led by former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has supported Jubbaland State’s recent appointment of an electoral committee despite opposition from the federal government.
In a statement on Sunday, Himilo Qaran commended Jubbaland leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe for establishing the seven-member Independent Election Committee, calling it a proactive step toward regional self-governance.
The party’s statement criticized the federal government’s treatment of regional administrations, accusing it of undermining regional autonomy. Himilo Qaran also warned against alleged federal plans to destabilize Jubbaland through organized armed uprisings, calling for restraint and respect for regional stability.
Jubbaland’s decision to establish its own election committee has drawn sharp condemnation from the federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, which labeled the move illegal and a threat to Somalia’s democratic progress.
In response, the ministry urged Jubbaland to adhere to the recent National Consultative Council (NCC) agreements, which outline a unified, universal suffrage electoral process across Somalia. The NCC, backed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and three regional leaders, has set dates for nationwide elections in 2025, focusing on unifying electoral processes throughout the country.
