Mogadishu Mayor, electoral committee discuss plans for democratic reform

Wednesday November 20, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Mogadishu Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madaale met with Somalia’s interim parliamentary committee on electoral laws to discuss advancing the electoral process and ensuring fair elections in the capital.

The discussions focused on the feasibility of conducting suffrage-based elections in Mogadishu, with the Banadir regional administration expressing support and providing recommendations.

MP Mahdi Mohamed Guled, chairman of the interim committee, expressed gratitude to the Mogadishu administration for its cooperation. “This collaborative effort shows our commitment to strengthening Somalia’s democratic processes,” Guled said. “The implementation of the National Elections Act will be a pivotal step towards ensuring that every citizen has a voice in the governance of our country,” he added.

The committee pledged to incorporate the administration’s recommendations into the final electoral law to establish a framework for elections and political organizations and formalize the electoral commission.

Earlier this month, the committee elected Mahdi Guled as chairman and Senator Iftin Hassan Iman Baasto as deputy chairman. Their mandate includes drafting critical regulations to guide Somalia’s transition to a robust democratic system.
