Friday November 22, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — The Japanese government has donated critical equipment to Somalia's Police Force Mine Action Unit, to strengthen its capacity to detect and neutralize explosive devices in the country.

Somali Police Chief Brigadier General Asad Osman Abdullahi received the equipment during a ceremony in Mogadishu on Thursday. He thanked Japan for its support, describing the donation as vital for enhancing public safety.

"This equipment and the training provided by Japan and UNMAS are crucial in safeguarding Somali citizens from the persistent threats posed by IEDs," said Brigadier General Abdullahi.

The Mine Action Unit, which plays a key role in mitigating the dangers of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), is undergoing specialized training facilitated by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

IED attacks have inflicted significant casualties among both civilians and military personnel, underscoring the importance of equipping and training security forces to counter the ongoing threat.
