U.S. pledges $28 Million for new resilience and food security projects in Somalia

Saturday January 4, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — U.S. government has announced a $28 million contribution to fund the first year of two five-year projects to boost resilience and food security in Somalia, U.S. Ambassador Richard H. Riley revealed during a press conference in Mogadishu.

Ambassador Riley stated that the programs will help more than 80,000 Somali households in Somalia.

“This year, the United States will complement its already huge investment in emergency assistance in Somalia with another 28-million dollar contribution to support the first year of two new five-year resilience and food security-focused projects. Over the next five years, these programs will help more than 80,000 Somali households—or approximately 500,000 people—build sustainable livelihoods, develop financial capital, and increase their savings and assets.”

The funding will support two major projects implemented through partners like World Vision and Save the Children. The first project will provide training and tools for sustainable livelihoods in agriculture, livestock management, and small business development. The second will enhance economic empowerment by improving access to microfinance and reducing financial instability for vulnerable communities.

In 2024, an estimated 6.9 million people in Somalia are expected to need humanitarian assistance due to severe weather, insecurity, and poverty. Over the past three years, the U.S. has contributed over $2 billion in humanitarian aid to Somalia.
