Mogadishu (HOL) — A controversial directive by school authorities in Axum, Ethiopia, banning Muslim girls from wearing hijabs in schools, has forced over 159 students out of the classroom. The move has sparked outrage among Ethiopia’s Muslim community, with leaders and advocates condemning it as a violation of religious freedom.

The Supreme Islamic Council of Tigray labelled the directive as discriminatory and unconstitutional.

“This decision undermines Ethiopia’s rich tradition of religious tolerance,” the council said in a statement, adding that Muslim students have faced harassment and detention for adhering to their faith.

A 12th-grade student from Axum High School, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her frustration.

“While my classmates continue their education, I’m stuck at home. This ban has shattered my dreams,” she said, calling on the government to reverse the decision.

Ethiopia’s education system is under immense strain, with 9 million children already out of school due to ongoing conflicts and natural disasters. The hijab ban exacerbates this crisis, disproportionately affecting Muslim girls and widening educational inequalities.

Religious leaders and human rights advocates are urging the Ethiopian government to intervene.

“Policies targeting specific groups threaten national unity and violate fundamental rights,” said a human rights advocate, calling for immediate action to restore educational access for all students.
