Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali security forces intercepted a vehicle packed with explosives on Wednesday along the highway connecting Mogadishu and Afgooye.
The vehicle, a Toyota Probox, was stopped following intelligence reports suggesting it was rigged with explosives and bound for Mogadishu. Authorities discovered that the explosives had been skillfully concealed inside a loudspeaker, an apparent ploy to evade detection at security checkpoints.
“The extremists intended to use this modified loudspeaker to bypass our forces, but their plan was foiled,” the Somali Police Force said in a statement. “This operation reflects our vigilance and commitment to staying ahead of the enemy’s evolving tactics.”
Specialized bomb disposal units safely dismantled the explosives, ensuring no harm to civilians or property during the operation, the statement added.
The seizure comes on the heels of heightened security measures in Mogadishu, where authorities have intensified inspections of vehicles and passengers entering the city. Officials say these measures have contributed to a notable decline in attacks over recent months.
Once a hotspot for violence, Mogadishu has seen relative calm in recent months as federal security forces sustain pressure on extremist groups across the capital. While challenges persist, Somali authorities are touting the city’s improved security as a step toward broader national stability.
