Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre has renewed his appeal for national unity in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS, emphasizing their significant threat to the security, lives, and property of Somali citizens.
Speaking in Mogadishu on Thursday, the Prime Minister underscored the urgent need to address terrorism as one of Somalia's key challenges.
"The government has conducted an investigation and found that the main factors threatening the existence of our country include terrorism, which endangers security, lives, and property," Barre said.
He also warned against the dangers posed by separatist ideologies, which he described as another major threat to Somalia's unity and statehood. "We have agreed that a solution should be sought from educated people, of whom you are a part," the Prime Minister added, urging intellectuals to contribute to finding lasting solutions.
Barre highlighted his government's focus on improving the nation's education system to empower future generations. "Plans are underway to improve higher education and educational institutions at all levels so Somali children can receive high-quality education. This will help produce a highly educated and skilled generation to contribute to the reconstruction and development of the country," he said.
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, has waged an insurgency against the Somali government and African Union forces since 2007. The group remains a significant threat despite ongoing military operations to dismantle its network.
