Baidoa (HOL) — Al-Shabab militants launched a series of
mortar attacks late Sunday on a military base in the Barujed area, located on
the outskirts of Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of Somalia’s
Southwest state.
The targeted installation is among the most fortified bases
near Baidoa, which has seen a rise in militant activity in recent weeks.
The exact number of casualties remains unclear, as neither
the Somali government nor Southwest state authorities have released official
information regarding injuries or fatalities resulting from the attack.
In a statement issued by the group, Al-Shabab claimed
responsibility for the assault and alleged that the shelling inflicted
casualties among the soldiers stationed at the base.
The attack marks the latest in a series of escalating
offensives by the al-Qaeda-linked militant group, which has recently
intensified operations around strategic areas near Baidoa.
