Sheikh Sharif blames MPs for Mogadishu violence

Thursday April 29, 2021

Mogadishu (HOL) -Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed returned to Somalia on Thursday and held a press conference where he spoke critically about the political situation in the country and the latest developments in Mogadishu.

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said that it is unfortunate that blood was spilt during the holy month of Ramadan.

Sharif also said that the dispute is political, and thus it is essential to find a negotiated settlement peacefully. He particularly thanked Prime Minister Roble for his efforts at resolving the conflict.

The PM hosted the Presidents of Hirshabelle and Galmudug along with leading members of the Council of Presidential Candidates to discuss the ongoing electoral and security issues in Somalia.

"The solution must be a political one that does not cross the line that previously crossed. I call for peace and elections to be held immediately," said Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The former President blamed Somalia's MPs for the violence that occurred in Mogadishu. Sharif said the violence resulted from their decision to extend their mandate at a politically volatile time.

"I'm calling on the Parliament to recognize that their extension led to the loss of life, injury and displacement. I hope they understand that their decision (to extend) was wrong ... So I call on you to handle your responsibility. This country must go to elections, and the elections must be negotiated."

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed thanked the international community for their role and its efforts to reconcile Somali leaders.
