Al Shabaab retake villages in Bay region

Friday December 2, 2022

Baidoa (HOL) - Al Shabab militants reportedly recaptured Deynunay village in the Bay region on Thursday following an ambush attack and heavy fighting between the militants and government forces.

Local residents said that the two sides used a variety of light and heavy weapons but are unsure of the casualties.

Somali government forces also withdrew from the Gofgadud Buurey district, about 30 kilometres from Baidoa town, and militants immediately entered the area.

Goofgadud is the second area to recapture al Shabab within 24 hours. The reason for the withdrawal of government forces from the district is unknown.

Security officials did not comment on the loss of Deynunay village, about 25 km from Baidoa, the interim capital of the South West regional state.

Last year in June, Somali National Army (SNA) killed 19 al-Shabab fighters and burnt two vehicles belonging to the terrorist group in an attack in Deynunay village.

Somali forces killed about 40 al-Shabab fighters in the Middle Shabelle region this week, the latest clashes in a monthslong offensive that aims to weaken the grip of the Islamist militant group in central Somalia.
