Police arrest over 50 members of youth gangs in Mogadishu

Monday December 12, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali police arrested over 50 members of youth gangs accused of robbery and drug use following a security operation in Mogadishu on Sunday.

Police spokesman Sadiq Aden Ali Doodishe said at a press conference that the arrested youth gangs were harassing and robbing people in the capital with pistols and machetes.

He added that they were a threat to the security of the Banadir region and had been handed over to the security agencies to face justice.

The arrest of the young men coincide with an increased number of armed bandits in Mogadishu recently.

Last week, Somali Police forces seized a large shipment of prescription drugs at the Aden Abdulle airport in Mogadishu, including Tramadol, Pethidine, Pregabalin and codeine syrup.

At least one of the drugs, Oxytocin injection, is used to induce labour in women during pregnancies.

Police spokesman Sadiq Doodishe said that these prescription drugs, typically opiates, are being misused every day on the streets of Mogadishu.
