ATMIS chief visits wounded soldiers in Nairobi hospitals

Tuesday December 20, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The newly appointed Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and head of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, visited ATMIS soldiers being treated in Nairobi hospitals on Monday.

During his first visit since he assumed office in November, Ambassador Souef lauded the soldiers for their commitment to restoring Somalia's peace and stability.

"I thank the soldiers for their contribution and support, as well as their families supporting them remotely. I assure them and their families that the mission will never let them down," said Amb. Souef, who wished them a quick recovery.

Ambassador Souef held discussions with the senior management teams of the facilities and was updated on the progress of the injured personnel.

"It quickens the healing process, and they feel appreciated by their bosses. This is something that should continue," said Col. Dr. Benard Gichina Mukuria, the ATMIS Military Welfare Liaison Officer.

Monday's visit comes as al-Shabab militants attacked a base housing Somali government soldiers and Ugandan troops in Lower Shabelle's Qoryoley district on Monday.

The casualties are unknown, and the Somali government and ATMIS officials declined to comment on the hour-long attack.
