Jubbaland distributes relief food to families in Kismayo

KISMAYO (HOL) - Jubbaland has provided relief food to about 3,700 families affected by the severe drought in the region amid UN warns impact of current severe drought in the horn of African nation.

The families who were displaced by the drought were settled in Luglow village on the outskirts of Kismayo town of Lower Jubba region, according to Jubbaland authorities.

The humanitarian supplies from Jubbaland state authorities comprise of rice flour, cooking oil and other supplies.

The distribution of the aid was supervised by Jubbaland Vice President Abdulkadir Haji Mohamud Lugadhere, Kismayo District Commissioner, Omar Abdullahi Mohamed Faraweyne and Jubbaland Refugee Agency Chairman Abdi Hussein.

Severe drought which has been ravaging the nation since last year has plunged millions of Somalis into starvation.

The UN estimates 7.7 million people are facing starvation this year up from 5 million last year.

On Monday, the second batch of humanitarian supplies donated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government, have reached Mogadishu to support thousands of people affected by the drought.
The consignment of food and medical supplies were received by Humanitarian Affairs Minister Khadijo Diriye.
