Jubbaland security minister announces offensive against Al-Shabaab

Monday December 11, 2023

Kismayo (HOL) - Jubbaland's Minister of Security, Yusuf Hussein Osman Dhumal, has announced readiness to combat Al-Shabaab and reclaim control over regions in Jubbaland.

Dhumal stated the operations are set to start soon, targeting the Juba region specifically.

"The upcoming operations against Al-Shabaab will be led by Somalia's President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. President Mohamud has been at the forefront of the fight to eliminate Al-Shabaab from the nation for months," said Dhumal, Jubbaland's Security Minister.

The urgency of the operation was underscored two weeks ago when Somalia's Prime Minister visited Kismayo, urging locals to support the Somali government's military offensive against Al-Shabaab.

This statement comes as Al-Shabaab militants control large swaths of territory in Jubbaland, dominating much of the rural Lower Jubba region and the majority of towns within the Jamaame district.

Al-Shabaab has faced significant pressure from government security forces and allied clan-based militias since the launch of a major offensive last year. Despite this, the group has demonstrated its strength with substantial counterattacks. In early March, Al-Shabaab fighters recaptured a base in Janay Abdale, roughly 60 km west of Kismayu. This base was initially taken by Jubbaland and Somali federal forces two months earlier as part of the broader offensive, which began in central Somalia before expanding south.

Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also announced that the next phase of the anti-Al Shabaab campaign will commence in Jubbaland and the South West regions. Mohamud expressed his determination to defeat Al-Shabaab before the 2024 withdrawal of ATMIS forces.
