Somali Intelligence arrests 25 people attempting to join al-Shabab

Tuesday November 7, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency announced on Tuesday that it had apprehended 25 people, including children, who were attempting to join the al-Shabab terrorist organization.

The agency reported that the people were intercepted in Afgoye town in the Lower Shabelle region following a tip-off regarding their travel plans. It added that the security forces had also taken into custody the driver of the vehicle and two accomplices who were facilitating the recruitment.

Last month, the Somali government released a report stating that it had neutralized 1,650 al-Shabaab terrorists and injured over 550 others in the past two months during a series of military operations in the south-central regions. At least 19 high-ranking terrorists were among those eliminated in the operations in Galmudug and Hirshabelle States.

Al-Shabaab has intensified its attacks since Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, re-elected for a second term last year, declared an "all-out war" on the militant group.
