Friday March 15, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has pledged to ensure a smooth transition of security responsibilities to the Somali Security Forces by December 2024. Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the African Union's special representative for Somalia, emphasized the necessity of this gradual transition, which has already seen the handover of 13 military bases and the withdrawal of 5,000 troops.

The ongoing process requires alignment and support from international partners to maintain Somalia's stability and development. The third phase, which involves the departure of an additional 4,000 troops, is slated for completion by the end of June 2024, reinforcing ATMIS's commitment to a well-organized exit and transfer strategy.

Souef highlighted the importance of learning from past experiences and engaging in open dialogue with the Somali government to ensure the success of the upcoming phases. This strategic approach aims to reinforce the achievements in securing the nation and guarantee Somalia's security forces a sustainable future.
