Mogadishu (HOL) — Somaliland's Ministry of Minerals and Energy signed a cooperation agreement with Emirates Industrial Laboratory, a UAE-based company, to develop advanced mineral testing facilities in the region.

The agreement, signed in Dubai by the Director-General of Somaliland's Ministry of Minerals and Energy, Mohamed Osman Said, allows Emirates Industrial Laboratory to set up mineral testing equipment. The deal aims to eliminate sending mineral samples abroad for analysis to countries such as India, South Africa, and Dubai.

Mohamed Osman Said, Director-General of Somaliland's Ministry of Minerals and Energy, stated that the agreement includes constructing state-of-the-art mineral testing facilities for minerals. He noted that the goal is to establish a laboratory that meets international standards, making it one of the most advanced in East Africa.

"Previously, we had to send mineral samples to other countries for testing, which was both costly and time-consuming," Said told the BBC Somali service. "The new facilities are expected to streamline the process, making local mineral testing more accessible and efficient."

The agreement also addresses longstanding safety concerns in Somaliland's mining sector, where untrained workers digging in unsafe conditions have led to fatalities. The Ministry has indicated that the new laboratory will improve safety standards and help ensure that those involved in mining have access to proper equipment and training.

The need for local testing facilities has been a challenge for Somaliland's mining sector, affecting operational costs and deterring potential investors.

Emirates Industrial Laboratory has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and operates in several countries across the Middle East. The company specializes in mineral and oil testing and provides various services, including environmental assessments and technical support for engineers.
