Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has pledged his monthly salary to support Puntland’s security forces in their fight against ISIS militants, urging both citizens and fellow lawmakers to contribute to the effort.

Warsame, a member of Somalia’s House of the People, announced his donation Tuesday. He described the ongoing battle as a fight to defend both the nation and Islam.

“I urge the Somali people to stand in solidarity with the brave troops risking their lives to protect our country from terrorism,” he wrote on Facebook. “I have donated my monthly salary, and I encourage both Houses of Parliament to support these courageous soldiers.”

His remarks come as Puntland’s administration recently launched a public support fund for its security forces, seeking financial backing to sustain its fight against Daesh, which has entrenched itself in parts of the northeastern Bari region.

While Puntland has been at the forefront of counterterrorism efforts in Somalia, its security challenges have intensified due to the growing presence of Daesh, which has carried out assassinations and extortion campaigns targeting local businesses. The group remains smaller in scale than Al-Shabaab but has continued to pose a persistent threat.

Warsame has been an outspoken critic of the federal government’s handling of Puntland’s security challenges, accusing Mogadishu of failing to recognize the region’s critical role in combating ISIS. He has argued that Puntland’s Daraawiish forces have been at the forefront of counterterrorism operations in northeastern Somalia, yet their efforts have often gone unacknowledged by national authorities.

His remarks come as Somalia’s federal government has reiterated its willingness to assist Puntland in its fight against the militants. However, relations between Mogadishu and Puntland remain strained, with the semi-autonomous state often asserting greater independence from the central government.
